Writing a report on a famous black american is a far cry from being legally forced to celebrate Black History Month. I don’t see your logic here.

Oh, no, you are not prejudiced, by any means. No, not you.

Because someone whined and complained about how Americans owe them something, when they are now one of the most privileged races here. Think about it: you can’t say anything, because then it’s “discrimination.” I don’t understand why there isn’t an American Indian month either.

Because your white ancestor enslaved an entire population based on skin colour then you segregated them and destroyed their lives. You forced them to live in a subservient to your interests, the LEAST you can do is celebrate a month which will NEVER compensate for your ancestors crime you selfish selfish woman.

Well they are actually not but the thing is the celebrations for others have evolved into other things over time…..While I do not see schools making kids write papers about Indians etc….I do NOT see blacks getting own land with own laws, casinos, etc.

So some get one thing, some get another….dunno if right or wrong.

Naila> You say white but that is a huge racist statement. The Irish are white and had nothing to do with slavery…same with the Russians, etc. There were plenty of white people who had nothing to do with it. You also seem to imply that African chiefs who SOLD the slaves had no blame whatsoever which is untrue and racist.
My family came to USA after slavery was abolished and were treated like dirt as the US hated the Irish with an intensity shown in the movie Blazing Saddles “We’ll take the n**gers and chinks but we don’t want the Irish”. So I really feel no guilt whatsoever and nor should I.
That being said i actually enjoy Black History month

In general, we are NOT forced to celebrate black history. However, the project for your daughter’s teacher seems to be an admirable one to me. She is being taught the values of all people, not those of just one race. What better race to teach during BHM? I would be proud of her for that.

You say “I’m not prejudiced by any means…”. Sorry dear, but the context of your question explanation refutes that.

So funny only uneducated and ignorant people complain because picking up a book seem to difficult. No one is forcing your child to write a report. In modern society every race/culture has to write a report on different races/cultures but its seem that racist white complain about doing a paper on a opposite of their race particular African American. Pick up a book Asian,Hispanic,Native American and etc has a month to celebrate their history and the reason why African American are noticeably in society we were the largest minority group until couple years ago and do some math at by saying that African American had to invest for the awareness to reach other African American and others for contribution in society.Eventually you we see a lot more of the Hispanic Heritage month celebrated on t.v because they are the largest and growing minority in the state.

Its not even February yet and people are complaining.

were not legally forced to partake in celebrations. writing something about the holiday is a far cry from forcing you to celebrate it. but if you really have that much beef with it, take it up with the principal

First off, white people get a month everyy month. People have to write reports about white people ALL the time, Why is it such a big deal that your daughter has to write a report about black people?

First and foremost, I’d like to say that I have friends from many different backgrounds and ethnicity’s, including, but not limited to African Americans, Haitians, and West Indians. With that said, I’d like to say that what Jessica is trying to ask is not some racial commentary about the inequality of the “poor whites who are forced to suffer some black education.” I think what she is trying to ask is why are we asked to praise certain ethnicity’s and not others. I am all for education, especially if it pertains to history. I do think that the blacks/African Americans/people of color etc, were handed a very raw deal 400+ years ago when slavery was first made widely available in the new world, but, and this is a very big but, you also need to realize that quite a fair amount of the Africans who were taken into slavery were sold by there own brethren, their tribe mates, and surrounding tribes as well, and the various Kingdoms that were in existence in Africa at the time also kept slaves of their own, so its not like a white man was sitting around one day thinking to himself “Self, what can I do to make me some money and screw the black people down south?”

I do not think that you are predjuduced by any means, Jessica. I feel that it’s one thing for a 1st grader to study and learn about a race or culture, but I do not feel that anyone should be ‘made’ to celebrate an entire MONTH to a race or culture. I am of Austrian/Cajun descent and my anscestors did not own any slaves.
I do pose the same question as you….’Why do we not celebrate a ‘Native American Day’ as a Federal Holiday? Afterall, THEY are the TRUE AMERICANS! And, regarding ‘Presidents Day’, it’s a known fact that many of our early presidents owned slaves, yet we celebrate them.
I would also like to pose this question: Why does the NAACP still include the ‘CP’ in their national org’s name? Shouldn’t it be changed to the NAAAA? And…since it’s purpose is to help advance ‘COLORED PEOPLE’….can a yellow, brown, or red person join their organization? To help them ‘advance’? Maybe we need to change MLK day to ‘ALL AMERICANS DAY’.
I pose another thought that many might want to ponder; After a 1st grade child studys all about the Afican American culture, isn’t it a little contradictory for them to leave school with the impression that ALL African Americans were a subservient race…beaten down and sold by ‘The great rich mean old whites’…then go somewhere with her mother only to hear Rap music(?) with questionable lyrics, hear on the radio/TV about yet another drive-by gang-bang shooting, see a young African American wearing a doorag or a ball cap sideways, and listen to an African American berate his girlfriend? After a child reading and studying about a ‘beaten-down’ race and then being exposed to this type of ‘REAL WORLD’ crap seems to me that it would confuse a child greatly.
I want to say this also: I have MANY ‘older’ Afican American friends that survived the ’40’s – ’50’s and THEY should be the ones causing so much trouble today…but they DON’T…and cannot even understand what the current generation has to complain about since it was the OLDER generation that endured things that were 1000 times worse than ANY African American has to ‘endure’ today and paved the way for all the ‘rights’ that they enjoy today!!
